For over 25 years, Mr. Benjamin has been a force in Seattle’s independent music scene, paving the way for artists to gain exposure and recognition. As the founder of Seattle Music Is Real, he has dedicated his career to giving local talent a platform to showcase their artistry through radio, media, touring, and digital streaming platforms.
His journey began in 1995, and along the way, he earned government recognition, receiving a Governor’s Award, a Mayor’s Award, and a King County Proclamation for his work in promoting positive music and uplifting the community. But his biggest inspiration came from the late DJ Nasty Nes, the first industry professional to believe in Seattle artists like Sir Mix-a-Lot. Taking that blessing, Mr. Benjamin made it his mission to carry the torch for the next generation.
His resilience is unmatched. Surviving a brain aneurysm and five open-heart surgeries, he sees himself as a living testimony to faith, perseverance, and purpose. Inspired by Clarence Avant, the Black Godfather, Mr. Benjamin believes Seattle has what it takes to become a true powerhouse in the music industry.
Seattle Music Is Real is thriving, with artists like MariBased1, JWavy, and Stakk Wittz leading the charge. The movement is growing stronger, and with the SMIRED Foundation, more resources are being created for independent artists to develop, network, and succeed.
Seattle’s time is now. The industry is watching.
